R.I.P. The Brigadier

Gallifrey One is reporting that Nicholas Courtney has passed away. He is best known for playing Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart on Doctor Who, working along with five of the first seven Doctors (not the first or sixth). He was 81.

R.I.P. Dwayne McDuffie

Comic Book Resources and Newsarama are reporting that writer and Milestone Co-Creator Dwayne McDuffie has died. No details are known at this time.

McDuffie is best known for Milestone Media, a comic book company owned by African-Americans. The best known character is Static Shock, who received an animated show in the 90's and has been recently with the Teen Titans. He also created Damage Control for Marvel Comics, a miniseries about a company which specializes in repairing the property damage caused by conflicts between superheroes and supervillains.

He was also story editor for the Justice League Unlimited cartoon and wrote several of the direct-to-DVD animated movies for DC. His most recent work was All-Star Superman which went on sale today.

According to Comic Book Resources, the last known public statement was a post to his Facebook page Sunday at 12:17 PM Pacific. He was scheduled to sign at Golden Apple Comics tomorrow evening as part of Reggie Hudlin's Reggie's World launch party.
UPDATE - Comic Book Resources has learned that McDuffie died from complications due to a surgical procedure performed Monday evening.

Star Blazers live action movie?

We talked a little about this on last night's broadcast, but Skydance Productions, the studio that helped produce the True Grit remake and the upcoming Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, is in negotiations to do a live action version of the Japanese manga series Space Battleship Yamato - or better known here as Star Blazers. Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote the screenplays for The Usual Suspects, and the upcoming Wolverine movie is set to do the script.

A live-action remake of Space Battleship Yamato was released in December in Japan, ousting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 from the top spot at the box office. This could be good, but what happened to the live action Gatchaman (or Battle of the Planets, or G-Force...whatever name you know it by)? Where is that movie?

Kevin Costner in Superman reboot?

Haven't seen anything official yet, but several reports are saying that Kevin Costner will be in the Superman reboot. Some reports also say that the actor will be playing Jonathan Kent, Superman's adoptive father. I like most of his work and think he'll do a great job in whatever role he is given. After doing a little research, I'm reminded of the film Mr. Brooks and wondered if he would make a great Lex Luthor. What do you think?

Spidey versus an army of Lizards???

Saw this news item last night on Bigfanboy.com. An army of Lizard-men versus Spidey? This is what the blog is reporting...

One of the primary important crew members (who shall remain nameless) recently let it slip to one of our readers (a trusted one at that) that many of the stunt actors in the film have been spending time in heavy make-up for hours on end because of a fight scene in the film where they’re turning all the S.W.A.T. team guys into reptilian creatures… which I’d assume is some nefarious work of The Lizard.

Quite honestly, this is the first time I've heard definitely that the Lizard is the villain or one of the villains. This sounds extremely cool is true. This has to be a third act event. This could be where Captain Stacy, Gwen's father (played by Denis Leary) may meet his fate. He was only around a short period of time in the comics. He first appeared in Amazing Spider-man #56 (1968). During a fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, he is crushed by falling debris while saving a child, in The Amazing Spider-Man #90 (1970).

We'll have to wait and see....

BOOM KIDS! Renamed KABOOM!; pick up Charlie Brown

BOOM studios is renaming their kids' line of comics from BOOM KIDS! to KABOOM! They also have picked up the rights to publish Charles Schulz's "Peanuts." Their offices are closed today for President's Day holiday so there i no further information regarding content or release date. BOOM KIDS!/KABOOM! already publishes several titles from the Disney/Pixar line (Mickey Mouse and Friends, The Incredibles, The Muppet Show, Darkwing Duck, etc.).

I guess we'll find out tomorrow whether the stories will be reprints or original material. Nice to see them back in some form.

Who are the Worthy teaser images

All week Marvel has been releasing images with the phrase "Who are the Worthy?" This is a part of the Fear Itself event that starts in April.

You notice that in each image it's three characters reaching for a different hammer. This has to be a Thor reference, but I'm not sure why the hammer is different in each one. Hmmm.... Any clues?

Here are the rest of the images...

Brad Meltzer on doing scripts for comic book movies

Brad Meltzer told The Hollywood Reporter he would do a superhero script "in a heartbeat." Which one would he do? "You give me the smallest character those characters have lived with me since I was eight years old. I would do Green Arrow in a heartbeat."

If you have not read Identity Crisis, do yourself a favor and read it. Great story. His stint on the Justice League of America was incredible as well. I would definitely see a movie if he wrote the script.

Adam West talks about "The Misadventures of Adam West"

Comic Book Resources has a great interview with Adam West regarding his new comic book that will be coming out in June from Bluewater Comics. I'm so looking forward to this!!!!

Shane Black to direct Iron Man 3?

It sounds like it's all but a done deal that Shane Black will direct the next Iron Man movie. The screenwriter/turned/director wrote scripts for Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Last Action Hero made his directorial debut for another script of his - Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (which starred Robert Downey Jr.,hmmm...). He will replace Jon Faverau who decided to work on the movie Magic Kingdom. Deadline reports he will be working on Doc Savage and is to direct the live action adaptaion of the manga series Death Note. It is not known If Black will write the script to Iron Man 3.

Tanit Phoenix's audition as Wonder Woman

Tanit Phoenix's audition for the Wonder Woman TV series has hit the internet. You can see it here on You Tube. I dunno.....what do you think?

The Return of Moon Knight, The Punisher, and Daredevil

Marvel announced it's "Big Shots" initiative featuring return of Moon Knight, Daredevil and Punisher series to be done by the industry's top talent. Moon Knight returns in May featuring Brian Michael Bendis as the writer and Alex Maleev. The Punisher series starts in June and Daredevil returns in July, but the writers and artists have not been announced.

Well, if the image is a hint, that looks like Alan Davis' pencil work so he may be involved. If so, I can't see him doing the Punisher, but it would be cool seeing him do Daredevil. If this is correct, remember you read it here first. :D

Detroit to get it's Robocop statue;

Three days into trying to raise $50,000 to fund a Robocop statue in Detroit, not only have they achieve that goal, they have $5,000 to spare. Mayor Dave Bing was against the idea when he announced plans to rejuvenate the city and boost its law and order. You can following the funding of the project at: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/imaginationstation/detroit-needs-a-statue-of-robocop.

This has me wondering, what statue would be built here in the Dallas area? Well, if it's Dallas, it has to be J.R. Ewing, right?

Verbinski talks about the Lone Ranger; James Franco is in demand; More Marvel deaths to come?; MARVELS pair re-unite to do Genesis

In an interview with Coming Soon, director Gore Verbinksi talks about the Lone Ranger project...

"It's sort of 'Don Quixote' told from Sancho Panza's point of view," said Verbinski of the Justin Haythe script, indicating that Depp's Tonto will actually be the main character, "...But it's coming along really great...[It] wouldn't shoot until next year, probably, because Johnny's doing 'Dark Shadows.'"
Well, that it explains why Depp is involved if Tonto is the lead, but the "Don Quixote" angle has me concerned. After the whole Jonah Hex debacle, you would think they would keep it a straight western. Sigh...

As if James Franco's plate isn't full enough, JustJared is reporting that the Oscar nominated actor is in talks to star in the live action Akira film. The film is set in futuristic Manhattan where a biker gang member named Shotaro Kaneda has to stop his best friend from releasing Akira, a person with the power to completely destroy the entire city.Wow! Talk about a workaholic!

At the ComicsPro retailer summit (which was held here in Dallas, TX), David Gabriel, Senior Vice President of Sales at Marvel Comics has announced that as a result of the Fantastic Four sales and media coverage, Marvel is going to kill a main character every quarter. He also added “this is not a joke”. Gabriel did however specify that these storylines are NOT about killing characters.  What’s key is what comes AFTER the deaths.  For example, after the Human Torch death, Spidey joined the team and the concept of “FF” got an entirely new focus as Future Foundation.

I am sorry, but if you have to kill someone off all the time to start a story line or move it along, you need to get out of the business, because you ain't that good! That's my $.02.

Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek re-team to do Kirby:Genesis. This marks the first time they are together since the Marvels mini series back in 1993. From the press release from Dynamite ...

You marveled at Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross' Marvels!  Now, prepare to be blown away by Kirby: Genesis!
February 10, 2011, Runnemede, NJ - Coming this May from Dynamite, Kurt Busiek will be re-teaming with Alex Ross for Kirby: Genesis, their first full collaboration since 1993's Marvels!  With Kirby: Genesis, Busiek and Ross are primed to expand on the vision of the legendary Jack Kirby with the same dynamic and unique perspective on superheroes that made Marvels such an original and successful story, allowing a new generation of comic book readers to become acquainted with the genius that is Jack Kirby!

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce that Alex Ross is not only co-plotting and laying out pages, but working with Kurt and Jack Herbert for special interior painted pages in the series.

The Kirby Event of the new millennium begins here, brought to you by the best-selling and award-winning creators of Marvels! The Pioneer 10 space probe carried a message to the stars. Now an answer's on the way -- but not one we expected! When it arrives, the lives of three ordinary people -- and the entire world -- will be changed forever. Featuring Captain Victory, Silver Star and more of Jack Kirby's greatest concepts, with finished art (from Alex's layouts) by Jack Herbert (Black Terror). This 32-page book with original story and art as well as additional bonus material will have a $1.00 Suggested Introductory Price!

"I'm delighted to see how the artwork's developing, from Kirby's designs to Alex's layouts to Jack Herbert's artwork. Jack's a terrific draftsman and storyteller, and he's doing a really sweet job bringing the story to life," says writer Kurt Busiek.  "His work also meshes well with Alex's, which goes beyond just layout, since there are various sequences in the story where Alex is doing fully painted art, including some where Jack's line art and Alex's painting are merged together. It's a terrifically effective combination."

"Working with Jack Herbert is an absolute thrill," says legendary artist Alex Ross.  "I've been so knocked out by his recent work on Black Terror, and now we will work side by side on Kirby: Genesis.  I'm satisfying my desire to get inside the story more by doing some full pages, panels, layouts, and even some figures that will only be seen as paintings by me.  The excitement is that much greater when you're working with such an amazing artist as Jack.  His stuff is just beautiful."

"I'm very honored to be able to be part of this project. It's such a huge honor for me, who grew up seeing the King's art," says artist Jack Herbert. "Not to mention the opportunity to work with such talented Comics masters as Alex & Kurt. I hope that with this series the new generation of comic-readers fall in love with such amazing universe of characters that only the fruitful mind of Jack "The King" Kirby could create. It's gonna be a wild and unique ride, gang!"

"Alex is so excited about the project that he wants to work hand in hand with Jack to paint as many interior pages as possible, which thrilled us all to no end," says Dynamite President and Publisher Nick Barrucci.  "Having Kurt and Alex together again collaborating on one of Dynamite's most important projects to date is nothing short of amazing.  Alex is making time in his schedule by turning down other work to make time to ensure that every page he paints be the best it can be.  Fans will be impressed with this series.  Jack Kirby's memory and work will be remembered by his fans and thanks to the creative team involved, will be brought to a new generation of comics fans."

"Having worked with Alex for the last several years, on a variety of projects, has been a personal high point in my professional career," says Dynamite Editor Joe Rybandt. "Now, adding Kurt to the mix takes it up from the fantastic to the incredible. The work these two men are doing, with the able help of Jack Herbert, is unparalleled in the world of pop culture... and Kirby defines - and now re-defines - pop culture."

No Luthor for Smallville finale?; Ryan Gosling is Logan 5?; Movement on the Red Sonja front

Apparently Michael Rosenbaum has turned down several offers to come back for the series finale of Smallville. A source told Spinoff Online that he "has put the show behind him and moved on. [...] By all indications, he is not going to be involved.”

“I’ve twisted his arm, I’ve taken him to dinner, I’ve gotten him drunk … I’ve tried to get him to sign papers that he didn’t know what they were … so, I’m trying everything that I can,” Tom (Superman) Welling told KryptonSite during Comic-Con International. “Michael wants to come back, but there are just some things to iron out, and I think he understands that we can’t end the show without Lex Luthor. We’re even teasing the idea that he’s going to be on already, with the idea of clones, or [the idea] that Lex has developed these bodies that he could then tap into to heal himself later in life.”

UPDATE!!!!  Several websites (including Superherohype) are reporting that Rosenbaum is indeed coming back for the final 2-hour episode of Smallville. The episode is to air May 13th.

Deadline is reporting that Ryan Gosling is close to signing on as Logan 5 in the remake of the sci-fi classic Logan's Run. The actor would reunite with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. The story depicts a dystopian future society in which population and the consumption of resources are managed and maintained in equilibrium by the simple expediency of killing everyone who reaches the age of thirty, preventing overpopulation. Logan 5 is a "Sandman," a law enforcer who tracks and eliminates people who "runs" from society's lethal demand. That is until he reaches that age.

Conan the Barbarian producer Avi Lerner, who confirmed that not only is Red Sonja set to make her big-screen return between the first and second Conan films, but they also have Simon West (The Mechanic, Con Air) on board to direct, according to Deadline Online. But who plays Red Sonja?

“Amber [Heard] is the new Red Sonja … but she doesn’t know it yet!” Lerner added.

Well, what do you think?

Lee Bermejo to write and draw a Batman original graphic novel; Green Lantern movie prequel comics and merchandise announced; Robin Williams as Hugo Strange rumor cleared up

Lee Bermejo, who did the artwork for the Joker and Lex Luthor: Man of Steel (both written by Brian Azzarello) will have a chance to write and draw an original Batman graphic novel titled Noel. No release date has been given. This should be good. I like his work.

The DC Source revealed that there will be five one shot prequels leading up to the Green Lantern movie that is to be released on June 17th. From the Source...

Experience it all in these one-shots, as told by the superstar Green Lantern movie team including producer Geoff Johns (GREEN LANTERN, THE FLASH), screenwriter Michael Goldenberg, producer/screenwriter Greg Berlanti, producer Donald De Line, screenwriter Michael Green (SUPERMAN/BATMAN) and screenwriter Marc Guggenheim (JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA). You might remember when I "reported" on the Robin Williams is Professor Hugo Strange rumor over a week ago. I said "From the "Take with a huge grain of salt" department." Well, I was right. Jett from the website Batman on Film finally cleared up the whole situation. His response...

"Absolutely nothing. All I was doing was thinking out loud after a chat I had with an industry friend of mine. I’ve made no secret that 1) I’d LOVE it if Robin Williams finally got his wish and was cast in a Batman film, and, 2) I’d also love to see the character of Hugo Strange included in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Put those 2 together things together and, “RW as Strange? Hmm…..”

That’s it.

I’m flattered that all these outlets think that one of my Tweets is a story, but really, they’re all making a mountain out of very small anthill. If I knew that Hugo Strange was in the film for a fact -- as well as Robin Williams portraying the character -- I wouldn’t say anything about it anywhere.

And if turns out that Hugo Strange is in TDKR and he's portrayed by Robin Williams, just chalk it up as "a lucky guess.;) "

Something tells me he got in trouble for this. What do you think about this?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play...?; No Raven this fall; Arkham City comes to comics

An anonymous contributor to Comic Book Movie is saying that Joseph Gordon- Levitt has signed on to play Alberto Falcone in The Dark Knight Rises. He is the estranged son of Carmine Falcone (who was portrayed by Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins. You may also remember him being the Holiday Killer in The Long Halloween maxi series written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale. While this is still considered a rumor, it makes sense consider the obvious influence this story has on the Nolan's movies.

Deadline is reporting that the pilots for the fall season have been picked and the Raven series is not among them. The CW is developing a series based on the New Teen Titan character created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. The website Comic Book Movie is theorizing that it will be a 2012 mid-season replacement, which would be interesting. The Wonder Woman TV series is to be a mid-season replacement for 2012. Hmm...

The Source announced today that there will be a Arkham City mini-series in May that  bridges the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City video games. The story is penned by Paul Dini, the writer of both games as well as Batman: The Animated Series with art by Carlos D'anda (one of the concept artists for the games). From the Source...

BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY picks up one year after the original game, where former Arkham Warden turned newly elected Mayor of Gotham City Quincy Sharp has decided to close down the infamous institution. In its stead, he establishes “Arkham City,” the new maximum security “home” for all of Gotham City’s thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds.  Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, inmates can roam free and do whatever they want as long as they don’t try to escape. To run this urban prison, Sharp has appointed Dr. Hugo Strange, a man who knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman. Each issue of the miniseries will be available day-and-date digitally worldwide for $2.99 each. These releases will alternate with 8-page digital-first interludes that will expand on the story included in the miniseries. Written by Dini and drawn by a variety of artists, these digital stories will focus on The Dark Knight’s many enemies as they vie for power in this new city within a city. Each eight-page digital-first interlude will be available for .99 cents, releasing in between issues of the miniseries, and will later be included in print in the BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY collected edition.

Fillion is Green Lantern; Harker: The Vampire Hunter; Jams Franco thinks Three's Company?; No Ra's in Dark Knight Rises; Spidey fam-made poster

Well, I kinda got my wish. Nathan Fillion has been cast as Hal Jordan in the animated movie Green Lantner: Emerald Knights. Also included in the cast is Henry Rollins (Sons of Anarchy, The Henry Rollins Show) as Kilowog, Jason Isaacs (the Harry Potter films) as Sinestro, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (They Live) as Bolphunga, Arnlod Vosloo (The Mummy) as Abin Sur, and Kelly Hu (The Vampire Diaries) as Laira. The movie will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand and for Download on June 7.

UGH. Apparently Warner Brothers is close to acquiring a spec script called Harker. Written by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the project is a retelling of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with protagonist Jonathan Harker turned into a Scotland Yard detective hunting down the vampire. The movie is being seen as the potential starter for a franchise.WHY????

Again from the OMG, WHY? department, Tvguide.com is reporting that James Franco (Spider-man,127 days) may be behind a big screen version of the 70's-80's sitcom classic Three's Company. He also hinted at an off-broadway play as well.

Liam Neeson will not be in The Dark Knight Rises. The actor, who played Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins says he will be busing reprising his role as Zeus in the sequel to Clash of the Titans (which is filming at the same time). However, he might be interested in doing the role at another time. We'll see...

Comic Book Movie.com is showing off this fan made poster for the upcoming Spider-man reboot movie. Looks good in my opinion. I still like the suit outside of the blue on the gloves. Can't see the boots so I don't know if the silver slippers are still there, but overall, I like the look. Hyzak created this poster and you can see more of his work here.

The Hobbit gets a start date; An all-star Rocketeer anthology?; More casting rumors; More Flashpoint teasers

After what seems to be endless series of delays, The Hobbit has a production start date of March 21st. I for one am ready to hear about progress in the shooting, not it's delays. Everybody cross your fingers!!!!

Hypergeek is reporting that IDW may be working on an anthology of the Rocketeer. The names that are attached includes Tommy Lee Edwards, Jonathan Ross, Tony Harris and Joe Pruett. Dave Stevens creation is very underrated. I loved reading the books and really enjoyed the movie. It's probably the best made comic book super hero movie ever made (better than the Richard Donner/Christopher Reeve Superman). I just wish it had received more attention than it did.

The latest casting rumor on the Wonder Woman TV series is that Tanit Phoenix is up for the title role, according to Comic Book Movie.com. She's been in movies such as "Lord of War", "Death Race 2", and "Lost Boys: The Thirst." Um...don't have too much of a problem if this is true. What do you guys think?

Also in superhero rumor "news," Yvonne Strahovskimay be up for the Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel in the Avengers movie. OK, take this with a grain of salt (like all rumors). If she is in the movie, is she Carol Danvers, or Ms. Marvel? Can't see them doing her origin in the movie. As to Yvonne, I've never watched the TV show Chuck so I can't say one way or another. Again, what do you guys think?

Totally missed this Friday. DC's The Source released more teaser images for it's upcoming event Flashpoint. You ready? OK, here we go...

When did Cyborg become our protector of Truth, Justice and the American Way?
Why is Citizen Cold the greatest hero of Central City?

Where will the Ravager strike next?

Who is the Outsider and why is he better than you?

What is top secret?

The Source also reports that Dan Jurgens is returning to Booster Gold in issue 44, which is a lead in to the Flashpoint event.

San Diego Con tickets sold out; Cobie Smulders is Agent Hill?; Will Batman have help?; Want more Spidey pics?; Flashpoint action figures

The 4 day set of tickets for this year's San Diego Comic Con went on sale today and sold out in a little over four hours. Friday and Saturday single days tickets are sold out as well. And for the record, Les did get his tickets, but it took him about two hours to do it! Geez!

UPDATE: The Con is completely sold out. On the brighter side,TicketLeap is working perfectly now. LOL!

Expect to hear in the next day or so that Cobie Smulders has signed on to play Agent Maria Hill in the Avengers movie. Apparently, Joss Whedon likes her and even considered her to play Wonder Woman when he was on the project. Stay tuned...

Ok, take with a major grain of salt but Ain't It Cool News has heard that some of the location searching that has been going on in Detroit MAY be for a secret hideout for...ROBIN. OK, Nolan and Bale have been on the record saying no Robin, but have they changed their minds? Could it be Nightwing  instead? Could it be someone not in costume helping Batman out? Does this have anything to do with Joseph Gordon-Levitt who is close to signing on? We'll see...

UPDATE: BatmanonFilm.com is saying Robin is NOT in The Dark Knight Rises. However, a casting call has gone out for an "European actress." Talia maybe?

Yup, more Spidey pics...Comic Book Movie has some more, especially with Andrew Garfield "using" his webshooters. The more I look at the suit, the more...I dunno. And what's going on...down there? Anyone have a clue? Why is it dark?

Here's wave one of the Flashpoint action figures that will be released by DC Direct. You can see the article at IGN.
