The Jim Lee/Geoff Johns Announcement on June 11th Will Be...

According to Bleeding Cool the announcement that will take place at the Hero Complex Film Festival on June 11th (as reported here) is that they will be the creative team for the new Justice League book. Shouldn't be a surprise - Johns has been wanting to do a book with the founding members for a while, and thanks to Brightest Day and Flash Rebirth (both written or co-written by Johns, what a coincidence), the founding members are alive and kicking to be reunited for the first time in thirty years! This comes shortly after the site reported that all the DC Comics published set within the DC Universe proper will be renumbered starting back at #1 after the end of the Flashpoint event.

I've mixed feelings about this. It'll be cool to see the original lineup back and with Johns and Lee in control. This slight change in the universe after Flashpoint has me a little concerned, but at least it's not a full reboot that was scattered all over the internet.

UPDATED!!!! Johns/Lee JLA confirmed! From The DC Source:

On Wednesday, August 31st, DC Comics will launch a historic renumbering of the entire DC Universe line of comic books with 52 first issues, including the release of JUSTICE LEAGUE by NEW YORK TIMES bestselling writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and bestselling artist and DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee. The publication of JUSTICE LEAGUE issue 1 will launch day-and-date digital publishing for all these ongoing titles, making DC Comics the first of the two major American publishers to release all of its superhero comic book titles digitally the same day as in print.

DC Comics will only publish two comic books on August 31st: the final issue of this summer’s comic book mini-series FLASHPOINT and the first issue of JUSTICE LEAGUE by Johns and Lee, two of the most distinguished and popular contemporary comic book creators, who will be collaborating for the first time. Together they will offer a contemporary take on the origin of the comic book industry’s premier superhero team.

In the hours, days and weeks to come, we’ll have more news about the other titles. Tomorrow, we’ll hear from Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee about this moment

ous occasion. Keep checking THE SOURCE for updates about the other first issues.

Update #2!! This full image has been posted on the internet just within the last half hour. The top portion was used on a USAToday article. But now the full version has been released. Interesting it's the founding group except Cyborg has taken Martian Manhunter's place. Wonder what that means...

Are You Ready for a Hawkman Movie??

From the "I will believe it when I see it" department, word has been slowing hitting the internet today that Warner Brothers may be developing a Hawkman movie. The reason for my attitude is there has been no real source to back up this claim be quite honest, this comes out of left field. But I decided to report it anyway seeing that it's starting to get out there.

Not that I don't want a Hawkman movie, that would be cool. The problem is his history is well...convoluted to say the least. I mean, his origin and past has changed so much and so often, they decided that he has been re-incarnated several times over and all pasts are legitimate. Which one would be used? Well, probably the version that will be in the new series written by James Robinson (no official word from DC regarding the series, but he "accidentally" blurted at the New York Con last year that it will happen).

Which version would I prefer to see? I don't know. Classic is always good, but I kinda liked the Hawkworld version as well. As to how this will affect the proposed JLA movie for 2013? Well, the cast of characters is to be the founding seven members, which he was not , so it shouldn't be an issue.

Stay tuned...

The Hobbit Release Dates, Titles Announced

The titles and release date for The Hobbit parts I & II has been announced. Part I is called An Unexpected Journey and will be released December 14, 2012. Part II is titled There and Back Again and is scheduled for a December 13, 2013 release. Here is the official press release...

First film slated to open on December 14, 2012 and second film to be released on December 13, 2013

New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM have announced the titles and release dates for filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit. The first film, titled “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will be released on December 14, 2012. The second film, titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” is slated for release the following year, on December 13, 2013.

Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” The adventure of “The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Under Jackson’s direction, both movies are being shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and Martin Freeman, who just won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the BBC series “Sherlock,” takes on the central role of Bilbo Baggins. Also reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

The screenplays for “The Hobbit” films are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham. The executive producers are Ken Kamins and Zane Weiner, with Philippa Boyens serving as co-producer.

“The Hobbit” films are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing being handled by MGM.

Video of Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Cage

A video has surfaced showing actor/Old Spice Guy Isaiah MustafaLink playing Luke Cage in what appears to be a teaser trailer. No one seems to know where it came from. As reported before, Mustafa wants the role, but no one knew how bad he wants it. That is assuming that he is behind this. Marvel has looked at doing a Luke Cage movie in the past, involving names such as Wesley Snipes (the Blade trilogy) and writer/producer/director John Singleton ( Boyz n the Hood, Shaft remake, 2 Fast 2 Furious). Take a look and see what you think.

Another Villain for the Avengers Movie Could Be....(Spoiler)?

Well, we know that Loki will be in the Avengers movie and there has been rumblings about the Skrulls being there (from just a setup for the next movie all the way to being allies with Loki). However, several websites are reporting that another villain may be in the movie...THANOS!

The only reason I can think of is that we had this object appear at the San Diego Comic-Con last year...the Infinity Gauntlet.

The item supposedly made an appearance in the THOR movie. I didn't see it, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. I originally missed Captain America's shield in the first Iron Man movie. But do we need Thanos and the Gauntlet in the first Avengers movie? Thanos...maybe, the Fans may not remember this but Thanos also has experience with...

The Cube has already been introduced in the THOR, and we know it will make an appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger. But still, I think Thanos should be a solo villain. Especially if you are going to have him with the Infinity Gauntlet!

Here's how I would handle it...

Avengers #1 - "The Beginning." The team has to be setup. Who's the leader? Cap? Eventually, but he's still a stranger in a strange land. Iron Man? Well, according to Iron Man II, he's a consultant, really not even a member. Thor? Most likely. What I see is Thor leading, Iron Man questioning him, then everybody deciding that Cap is their best bet. Loki will be the villain, and we'll set up the Skrulls for...

Avengers #2 - "The Kree/Skrull War." You know they have to do this. Since the Skrulls have been set up in the first movie, less burden to introduce both races. Just introduce the Kree and (one of my favorite characters) Captain Mar-Vell. Of course, Mar-Vell stays on Earth at the end. It's a good thing too, since he will be needed to battle...

Avengers #3 - "Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet." Thanos has been more of a villain for the cosmic heroes than say...the Avengers. So having Mar-Vell around would make some sense (just don't kill him off!). Maybe by then they have introduced more Avenger members and possibly bring in characters from other movies (except the ones that are being handled by other studios...Spider-Man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, X-Men).

If this "news" is true, this would be cool. Color me skeptical at this point.

DC Entertainment Gets Help in Superman Lawsuit

DC Entertainment will be allowed to use documents that were stolen from Marc Toberoff's office in their countersuit against him saying he has poisoned the relatiuonship between DC and the estates of Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, the creators of Superman. The company received the documents from an attorney who used to work in Toberoff's practice. Toberoff appealed, siting client/attorney privelege had been breached by Warners using those stolen documents.

However, Toberoff obeyed a subpoena from one court to hand copies of the documents to federal authorities investigating the theft. U.S. Magistrate Judge Ralph Zarefsky found that Toberoff breached this privilege himself, so the documents can now be used in a case against him. Will this be enough to give the win DC/Warner Brothers want? We'll see...

Lucas Discusses the 3D Coversion of Star Wars and Update on Live Action TV Series

George Lucas appeared on Attack of the Show and discussed the conversion of the Star Wars movies to 3D. He said that their 3D post-conversion is better because he is using the same crew that did the original films to assist, giving their expertise and experience making the films to the conversion.

He was also asked about the delayed live-action TV show. 50 hours have been shot, but the series is shelved until they can figure out a way to bring the Star Wars film quality to the TV at a reduced cost. They are working on technology to do it at 1/10 of the cost.

Here is the interview

Happy Birthday Star Wars!!!

Thirty-four years ago today, a little movie called Star Wars came out. You might have heard of it.

Twenty-eight years ago today, Return of the Jedi came out...

Today is a good day to be a Star Wars fan!

X-Men: First Class Cameos (Spoilers)

Bleeding Cool is reporting the knowledge of two cameos in the upcoming movie X-Men: First Class, but is only reporting about one...for now. The scene takes place while Xavier and Magneto are recruiting mutants...

Funny scene if true. X-Men: First Class will be released on June 3rd.

X-Men's Beast Selling Insurance???

Apparently this commercial has been out for a short period of time, but it's just been brought to my attention. The latest ad for Farmers Insurance not only has the great J.K. Simmons (OZ, The Closer, J.Jonah Jameson from the Spider-Man movies), but apparently has Beast from X-Men. The premise is the Farmers Insurance school is involved in a student exchange program with the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Take a look...

Stan Lee Reveals His Cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man

Stan Lee was here in Dallas (Irving actually) for the Dallas Comic-Con over the past weekend. During a Q & A session, he was asked about how he gets the cameos and what was his favorite. After a little joking around, especially the REAL reason why he's not in X-Men: First Class, he revealed his cameo scene for the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man. He plays a librarian who is working with headphones on listening to music. Meanwhile Spidey and the Lizard are battling behind him. Sounds funny. I kinda like that his cameos are starting to take a more humorous tone.

The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled for a July 3, 2012 release. Here's a YouTube video talking about his cameos and the one for The Amazing Spider-Man. Thanks to SuperHeroHype for posting this.

The World of Flashpoint

DC: The Source released a map revealing the world according to the events of Flashpoint. The event is where the timeline of the DC universe has been changed on a massive level and only Barry (Flash) Allen and his arch-nemesis Professor Zoom are the only ones who know what the proper timeline should be.

A couple of things stand out...

1. Republic of Japan (Tornado protected) - Red Tornado? Interesting...
2. Brazil (Nazi - occupied) - 'nuff said
3. Alaska (Land of the undead) - the zombies decided to move north...OK.?
4. Neutral Territories - once again Australia is left out. I don't think they have been part of an event since Invasion (back in 1988-1989)

To be quite honest, I wasn't all that impressed with the first issue, and I was looking forward to this event. I'll give it another chance.

Dark Knight Website Alive...and Chanting?? (Possible Spoiler?)

The website for The Dark Knight Rises went active this morning, and if you head over there you will see a black screen and hear...chanting. Click anywhere on the screen and you will see the audio player. A message board member of SuperheroHype figured out that the chant is "The Fire Rises." That apparently refers to a Twitter page. If you follow the page, your Twitter image (from what I can tell) will be used to fill in a larger image which is...

Tom Hardy as Bane

This is awesome! Whoever thought this up earned his/her/their paycheck! It will be interesting to see what else they do in the months to come. The Dark Knight Rises is scheduled for a July 20, 2012 release.

THOR Sequel Planned for 2013? Are These the Possible Villians?

Cinema Blend (among others) is reporting that we may see THOR 2 as soon as 2013. We may already know who the villains are. Granted, it's WAY TOO EARLY, but it seems that we may see Amora, the Enchantress and her minion, Skurge, the Executioner.

For those who don't know, Amora is an Asgardian sorceress who has feelings for the God of Thunder. She has used her sorcery to enhance her natural beauty and allure, and to enchant her lips so that by kissing virtually any man she can make him her slave.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is already signed for six movies (presumably three THOR movies and three Avengers). Tom Hiddleston (Loki) said he's signed on for five movies (and he'll be in the Avengers movie), so will we see Loki return? We'll have to wait and see. If this is accurate (and I think it is), the THOR sequel will be out the same summer with IRON MAN 3 (scheduled for a May 3rd release).

DC to Relaunch All Titles in September?

Bleeding Cool is reporting that DC will relaunch all titles in September with new #1s. They base it off the fact that the Flashpoint event will be over and the way things appear in the August solicitations which were released yesterday, ALL story arcs end in August.

Hmm...not sure what to think about this. I hate when books are cancelled only to be restarted in a couple of months with a new number one. I definitely hate it that a year or two later, they go back to the original number - just in time for a landmark number (say #600? - yeah, I'm looking at you Marvel). We'll just have to wait and see...

The Adventures of Tintin trailer

The teaser trailer for The Adventures of Tintin has been released. The animated movie is based on a French comic strip that started back in 1929. The hero, Tintin is a young Belgian reporter who is drawn to dangerous international intrigues.

Steven Speilberg will produce and direct. Peter Jackson is also one of the producers. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn will be released December 23rd.

Fright Night Trailer and Poster Released

The official poster and trailer for the Fright Night remake were released today. Here is the premise of the movie...

Charley (Anton Yelchin) is a teenager convinced that his new neighbor (Colin Farrell) is a vampire. Toni Collette plays the boy's disbelieving mother, who falls under the vampire's spell. Peter Vincent (David Tennant) is a Las Vegas/British magician whose show revolves around horror movie imagery. Vincent claims to be a vampire expert, but when the teen turns to him for assistance, he is less than helpful.

Here's the trailer...

Classic Marvel Comics Sacrificed for Upper Deck

LinkYou may have already heard about this travesty, but Upper Deck is taking old, Marvel comics that are in horrible shape, and cutting out panels to make exclusive inserts for the 2011 Marvel Beginnings card set. This is horrible! Why are they doing this? Yes, the books bad shape, but still...ugh. You can see more of the exclusives on their blog.

Here is a little video they put together to show you the process. Watch at your own risk if you are a collector....

The Return of Star Trek: The Animated Series?

Star Trek writer Bob Orci revealed this week the possibility of putting together another animated Star Trek TV series. I assume it will be the continuation of the rebooted franchise, but who knows? Reading the response, fans want the original cast back and I doubt that will happen. Shatner and Nimoy will want too much money and of course we no longer have DeForest Kelly (Dr. McCoy) and James Doohan (Scotty, and most of the other voices on the original cartoon).

The interesting thing will be which format will they use? Traditional animation, or the 3D computer animation similar to Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I would lean to the latter, another break from the original franchise, but it's not my money. Stay tuned...

Flashpoint #5 Gamble

In a stunning and bold move, DC will only have one title out the week of August 31st - Flashpoint #5. August is a five week month so obviously the other titles are shifted to the previous weeks. This is a gamble, since the other publishers will have taken into account that there are five weeks and acted accordingly. Will it work? Will it backfire? I don't know. The response to the first issue (which came out Wednesday) has been mixed to say the least. Haven't seen a lot of "I liked it." It has either been you loved it or hated it. We'll see how issue two fairs. Here is the solicitation...

Kevin Smith's Six Million Dollar Man Comes to Dynamite!

Dynamite is taking the Kevin Smith script for The Six Million Dollar Man and turning it into comic book form. This is following the successful adaptation of Smith's Green Hornet script to comics last year.

"True story: when I turned in a script for The Six Million Dollar Man back in '98, there was an exec who dismissed it as being more like a comic book than a movie," said Smith. "It's an honor to head back into the trenches with the same creative team at Dynamite that made my Green Hornet script so readable and fun. It makes me moist."

Here are the variant covers to issue #1, which comes out in August.

John Carpenter's The Ward Finally Gets a Release Date

John Carpenter's first film since Ghosts of Mars (back in 2001) finally gets to be released. Shock Till You Drop reports that the film will be out on July 8th. It will be available On Demand June 8th.

The story revolves around a young institutionalized woman named Kristen (Amber Heard) who is haunted by a mysterious and deadly ghost. As danger creeps closer, she comes to realize that this ghost might be darker than anything she ever could have imagined.

Here's the trailer (pay no mind to the "This January").

Say Goodbye to Greg Pak, Incredible Hulks

With Issue #635, which comes out in August, Greg Pak leaves a book he has been writing since 2006. According to the Marvel's press release, it is also the series finale. Pak took the Emerald Goliath off-world, brought him back to start a World War and beyond. This five year run is not the longest in the history of the Hulk books (Peter David was there for a staggering 12 years), but still quite remarkable in today's time where someone MAY stay on a book for a year to do ONE story.

I jumped on this book just after the Planet Hulk arc and have enjoyed the ride. Pak has written an incredible (no pun intended) version of the Hulk and made Bruce a even bigger threat than the monster. Sad to see him go. His replacement has some BIG shoes to fill (pun half intended).

Fox Cancells Human Target; Passes on Locke & Key

The Hollwood Reporter is reporting that Fox has indeed cancelled The Human Target. The show has been on the bubble for most of this past season. The series was loosely based on a DC character created by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino back in 1972. This is the second series based on the Christopher Chance character. Rick Springfield starred in the 1992 series developed for television by Danny Bilson and Paul DeMeo (who developed the Flash TV show) and lasted seven episodes. The current series, starring Mark Valley, lasted two seasons - 25 episodes.

The network also passed on the pilot to Locke & Key, a series of miniseries from IDW. The story is about a an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all. The series and writer (Joe Hill) were nominated in 2009 for the Eisner awards. The pilot is now being shopped to other networks.

Tom Welling Bering Persued...By Marvel?

From the "Take This With a Grain of Salt" Department, What's Playing has heard from an unnamed source that Marvel Studios may be looking at the soon-to-be-former star of Smallville for a project. The article speculates on what project it may be. Among those mentioned include Deathlock, Runaways and Doctor Strange.

I don't see this happening, not because of the Marvel/DC issue, it's that Welling is free to do whatever he wants (not that he couldn't do that during the series), he probably would want to stay away from this genre for awhile. But I've been wrong before....

Real Steel Trailer

The plot: A future-set story where robot boxing is a popular sport and centered on a struggling promoter ( Hugh Jackman) who thinks he's found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful rise to the top, he also discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father.

Three Stooges Film Begins Production Today

The Farrelly Brothers have started production on their Three Stooges film in Atlanta today. As stated before, the film is three 27 minute stories with the central arc being the Stooges trying to raise money to save the orphanage they grew up in.

Here are your 21st century Stooges...

Chris Diamantopoulos (The Starter Wife, 24) as Moe, Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) as Larry, and Will Sasso (MADTV, $#*! My Dad Says) as Curly.

The rest of the cast includes: Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Mother Mengele, Jane Lynch (GLEE) as Mother Superior, Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) as Mrs. Harter and Stephen Collins (7th Heaven) as Mr. Harter.

I've been told the script is very much in vein to the originals work. It's sounds basically like a love letter to Mrs. Howard, Fine, and Howard. I hope so. The movie is scheduled to be released early next year.

RIP Dana Wynter

News has broken about the death of Dana Wynter. Wynter died Thursday of congestive heart failure at Ojai Valley Community Hospital's Continuing Care Center at the age of 79. She is best known for being the female lead in the sci-fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Kevin McCarthy (who died last year). She was also in the movies Sink the Bismark!, D-Day the Sixth of June, and Airport.

Thor: God of the Box Office

Thor took in $66 million at the box office this weekend. Overall, the film took in $242 million in less than two weeks! Paramount said the movie is doing what they expected. It's US opening is better than X-Men and Fantastic Four (around $56 million), but not as well as Iron Man or Spider-Man (both cleared the $100 million mark).

This is a good sign. Of course, we'll need to see if the film has any staying power, but this was a major hurdle for Marvel Studios. Expect more Thor and the Avengers for sure. I know the Green Lantern will do well, but still have concern for Captain America. Not so much the character, but the patriotic aspects. We'll see in a couple of months.

Wolverine to Join X-Men: First Class?

In an exclusive interview with IGN, Bryan Signer said that he's ok with the possibility of Wolverine joining the X-Men: First Class at some point.

"I think there would definitely be room. I think it would be a very exciting thing. This universe has to establish itself before, but that would be a very interesting and fun thing."

Since the Wolverine franchise is in a holding pattern at best, this may be the best way to see Hugh Jackman as the man who's the best there is at what he does, but what he does best isn't very nice.

R.I.P Jackie Cooper

Veteran actor Jackie Cooper passed away Tuesday at the age of 88. No cause has been listed. The actor had a 60 year career starting with the Our Gang comedies in 1929 up until his retirement in 1990. He has been in several movies and guest starred in many TV shows, but may be best known as playing Perry White in the Superman films starring Christopher Reeve. He directed several TV episodes from the mid 50s until 1989. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

Another Version of Seven Samurai?

According to Variety, a modern take of Akira Kurosawa's classic, Seven Samurai. In this version, "a town in northern Thailand recruits seven paramilitary contractors from around the globe to defend it from attack." The film will be produced by Weinstein Co. and Japan's Kurosawa Prods. Scott Mann is set to direct. John Fusco (Young Guns I & II, The Forbidden Kingdom) was been working on the script for the Weinsteins.

The original premise of Seven Samurai was a village of farmers that hire seven samurai to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops. The premise was tweaked into one of my favorite westerns, The Magnificent Seven...

And used again by Marvel in the first major story arc after the adaptation of Star Wars...

We'll just have to see if this is as good as the previous versions. It's still a great story.

Hugh Jackman Ready for a FANTASTIC VOYAGE?

It's really sounding like The Wolverine won't be seen anytime soon. Last month, there was speculation that he would star in Snow White and the Huntsman, now he may be attached to the remake of Fantastic Voyage. The movie (which apparently will be in 3D) will produced by James Cameron. Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum movies, The Pink Panther remake) is attached to direct. The two have worked together on the recently completed Real Steel, a film where robots have replaced humans in the boxing ring and Jackman's character (a former champion) builds a robot to compete for a championship. The script is written by Laeta Kalogridis who also wrote Shutter Island for Martin Scorsese, and is writing Ghost in the Shell for Avi Arad and DreamWorks. Loved the original, an update might be interesting. What do you guys think?
