A Better Look at The Man of Steel's New Threads

Several sites have already posted these, so this may be old news to you. Some pretty nice images have been taken of Henry Cavill in the new Superman duds. I'm surprised about this, but it may explain why the original image was released some time ago. Warner Brothers knew people would be staking out locations and taking pics and videos of the scenes that were filmed and leak it to the internet. Anyway, here they are for you to enjoy, complain, or meh.

Westerns Making a TV Comeback?

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Battlestar Galactica Executive Producer Ron Moore has sold a western drama to ABC. The show, called Hangtown, will revolve around a "Marshal who solves crimes by instinct, an East-Coast crime-solving doctor who relies on emerging forensics, and a young woman who writes about crime in the Wild West." The article also mentions that a few other western properties being sold, including one from a female perspective by Pete Berg and Liz Heldens (Friday Night Lights).

Is the western genre making a comeback? I hope so. Yes, Jonah Hex and Cowboys & Aliens didn't do as well as some hoped, but the remakes of 3:10 to Yuma and True Grit  did well enough to show that there might be some interest. The genre was really popular in the 50s and 60s, but I can't recall the last western TV show. Maybe someone out there will remind me.

I wasn't into westerns until about ten years ago. Now I love them, even some of the bad ones (and there are some, like with any genre). I wondered if anyone would try again, and if anyone would watch it. But then I thought, if the stories are good, does it matter if it's a western?

MODOK in Captain America Sequel?

I've already reported on Captain America: The First Avenger wants to add the Falcon and Sharon Carter, they also want someone else, MODOK! Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely want to have Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing in the next Cap film. They also would like Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) in the role.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (as if you couldn't tell), MODOK was originally George Tarleton, a tech for the terrorist organization Advanced Idea Mechanics. He was altered to become MODOK and he eventually becomes the leader of the organization and a reoccurring villian for Captain America.

Interesting. I never thought about using MODOK. I've thought of Crossbones, Madame Hydra/Viper, Taskmaster (which would be cool), Baron Strucker, Baron Zemo, but the obvious choice is Arnim Zola since he was in the first movie.

So what are your thoughts? Who do you wish to see Cap go up against in the sequel?

Batgirl #1 Preview Removes All Doubt

The New York Post published a few pages from the upcoming Batgirl #1 with Barbara Gordon once again wearing the cowl. The book is written by fan favorite Gail Simone with art by Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes, and covers by Adam Hughes. Some questioned if the events from The Killing Joke took place in the new DC Universe. Well, see for yourself. The issue comes out September 7. There has been a lot of controversy about this move. Some feel that Barbara was a better role model being Oracle and being disabled. I've already had my say in the matter, what are your thoughts?

The Destroyers are Coming in 2012!

Remember a few days back when I went off on Marvel about event titles and figured this is the new one for next year? Well, I stand by my words, but this is not an event, it's a mini-series featuring a team of Marvel monsters. Written by Fred Van Lente with art by Kyle Hotz, The Destroyers is a five issue mini-series that will begin in February. The members include: Thing, She-Hulk, A-Bomb, Beast, Karkas, and Devil Dinosaur (Moon Boy will be there as well).

Color me intrigued. Van Lente discussed the possibility of this being an ongoing title, which we will have to wait and see. Do you want to see a team of monsters?

Alpha Flight Will Be a Ongoing Title

When the Alpha Flight series was announced a few months back, writers Greg Pak, Fred Van Lente and artist Dale Eaglesham were asked about it being a mini-series or an ongoing. Their response was it was going to be eight issues, but could go longer if the sales are there. Apparently they were because at the FanExpo Canada yesterday, Pak and Van Lente announced the title was to be an ongoing.

Alpha Flight is a group of super heroes who answer to the Canadian government as part of Department H, a branch of the Department of Defense. In the current book, the government (and essentially the country) has turned against the team, who have gone from revered to outlaws in a blank of an eye.

I highly recommend this book and I am excited to know that it will be continuing past the eight issues that were announced.

Dwayne Johnson Wants to be Luke Cage

Responding to a question on Twitter, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stated that he wants to play Luke Cage.  His exact words were "I'd crush it." Johnson is currently filming G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation portraying the Joe code name Roadblock. A couple of months ago, Isaiah Mustafa lobbied for the role of the Marvel superhero. He even went so far as to do a video.

Luke Cage was sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. In exchange for parole, he underwent an experimental procedure, that gave him invulnerably and super strength. He became a superhuman private investigator.  He is currently leading one of the groups of  Avengers.

So what do you think? Does the Rock have what it takes? Should there even be a Luke Cage movie? I think there should be a Heroes for Hire movie teaming him with Iron Fist, but that's me.

Justice Society Book is Confirmed; as is an Earth-2

The big announcement (so far) at FanExpo Canada is that the Justice Society is returning. The book will be written by James Robinson with art by Nicola Scott. Rumors have been swirling about this book and creative team since San Diego Comic Con last month. Not sure if this is an ongoing or just a mini-series. The other big announcement is that the book takes place on Earth-2.

This is interesting. Some of the higher ups (Geoff Johns for one) is a fan of the old DC. Is this a step toward going back that direction? Are any of the original 52 part of Earth-2 as well (I'm looking at you Mister Terrific)? Could heroes that supposedly don't have a place here (Donna Troy, Wally West) have a home there? Will the Shazam family be there (eventually)? Will there be Earth-2 versions of Earth-1 heroes like in the past?

This opens some doors. Granted, some may not want those doors open, but what can you do?

Another Remake Coming, This Time it's Flatliners

From the "Oh My God Please Stop" Department, Columbia Pictures is doing a remake of the 1990 film Flatliners. Why? Probably because all of the 80s films have been, or in the process of being remade. ComingSoon.net is reporting that Source Code, Species III and Species: The Awakening writer Ben Ripley has been hired to do the screenplay.

The original film starred Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Oliver Platt, and William Baldwin as medical students who conducted experiments with near-death experiences. Let's just say things don't go well from there.

I'm not going to say it. If you are a regular reader, you know my stance on the three R's (remakes, reboots, and re-imaginings). Let's just see how far this one goes....

International Trailer for "In Time"

Let me start of with...this movie looks good. But don't take my word, watch the trailer. Here is the official synopsis for the film..

Welcome to a world where time has become the ultimate currency. You stop aging at 25, but there's a catch:  you're genetically-engineered to live only one more year, unless you can buy your way out of it.
The rich "earn" decades at a time (remaining at age 25), becoming essentially immortal, while the rest beg, borrow or steal enough hours to make it through the day.
When a man from the wrong side of the tracks is falsely accused of murder, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful hostage.  Living minute to minute, the duo's love becomes a powerful tool in their war against the system.
The film stars Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, and Olivia Wilde (who seems to be everywhere  now days). The film is scheduled for an October 28, 2011 release.

CW's Replacement for Smallville? DEADMAN!

Deadline is reporting that the CW Network is developing a Deadman series with Supernatural creator Eric Kripke writing and executive producing the project. Created by Arnold Drake and Carmine Infantino, Deadman is the story of Boston Brand - a circus trapeze artist who was murdered and came back as a ghost to get justice. He has the ability to possess a living body for his purposes thanks to the Hindu goddess Rama Kushna. Deadman has recently reappeared in the DC universe during Blackest Night and Brightest Day events.

I only have you thing to say...YES!!!!!!!!

Ghostbusters 3 is a Go; Murray Involvement Still Unclear

Dan Aykroyd was on the Dennis Miller Show and talked about the status of the much talked about third installment of the Ghostbusters franchise. But it still sounds like Bill Murray's involvement is still up in the air...

"Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray. That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that ‘Ghostbusters’ is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much bigger than an individual role and the promise of ‘Ghostbusters 3′ is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood."

Well, it sounds like they are ready to move on one way or another. To be honest, I don't know about this. The second movie left a bad taste in my mouth. Granted, this sounds like a "passing the torch" so the franchise will go on without worrying if the original cast comes back or not. Let's just leave it alone and enjoy what we have.

Possible Invisible Man Remake Coming from Universal?

The LA Times is reporting that Universal might bring back the H.G. Wells classic to the big screen. The intention is to expand the lore, but keep it a period piece. They apparently want to do something similar to the recent Sherlock Holmes films starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Writer-director David Goyer (the Blade trilogy, Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy, the upcoming Superman reboot: Man of Steel) is involved in the project...

“It’s period but  it’s a reinvention of the character in the sort of way that Stephen Sommers exploded ‘The Mummy’ into a much bigger kind of mythology. That’s kind of what we’ve done with ‘The Invisible Man. We did some pre-vis tests and things like that that they were very happy with. Now we’re going through the casting process. if they get the right lead, they’ll make it.”

So, do you want a period, action-adventure Invisible Man film? Sounds intriguing, but I hope they don't forget the science and horror aspects as well.

Locke & Key Trailer Leaked

The trailer for Locke & Key TV series has hit the internet. The trailer was put together by Fox to show to advertisers before they decided not to pick up the series. I'm not sure if this was meant to see  the light of day, but it's out there now. And it looks good.

The story of Locke & Key is about three youths who become caretakers of a New England mansion called the Keyhouse. The mansion is full of doors that lead you to different worlds - full of magic and horror. The comic is written by Joe Hill with art by Gabriel Rodriguez. The series is published by IDW Comics.

I have not checked out this book, but I should. The trailer makes me wish pilot would be picked up by someone ... and it might. Who knows?

Wolverine Production Start Delayed

We originally reported that the Wolverine movie was to start production in October, it now seems like it has been pushed back to Spring of 2012. No explanation has been given. Hugh Jackman is currently filming an adaptation of Les Miserables. The script is based off of the mini series back in 1982 by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma remake) is directing the sequel.

This obviously put the release date of sometime in 2012 in doubt. However, Marvel Studios already has three films coming out next year (Ghost Rider, The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man) and with all the complaints the previous Wolverine film had, the last thing they need to do is rush this one just to get it out.

Could J.J. Abrams bring Star Trek Back to TV?

While talking to Popcornbiz, J.J. Abrams was asked about if he thought about overseeing Star Trek's return to the small screen...

It's never really come up, frankly, but depending on what that would sort of be and how it would be done I'd be open to the idea of it. Right now we're just sort of  focusing on making a movie that's worth people's time.

As to the next installment of the New Star Trek franchise...

I'm excited. We're working hard. We're very close and I hope to have something to talk about concretely soon. I do feel like if 'Trek' happens as we hope that it will, it will be a fun return to that group of people, because it's an amazing group.

He was also asked about the possibility of  his shows (Alias, Fringe, Lost) jumping to the big screen. He jokingly says...

I think that people could probably come up with better ideas for movies than rehashing my
old TV shows.

Well, considering the state of Hollywood today, with the three Rs (remakes, reboots, and re-imaginings), comics, novels, video games, BOARD games (Battleship anyone?), and TV shows being used as source material for films, it's not as far fetched as he jokes. So what do you think? Do we need Star Trek back on the small screen? I say it's OK with me.

Trailer for Aliens: Colonial Marines Video Game

SEGA has released the gameplay trailer for Aliens: Colonial Marines. The first-person shooter game has been in development for over five years and is to be released the Spring of next year. The plot is you are leading a search and rescue team to investigate the fate of the U.S.S. Sulaco and the previous search and rescue team that was sent to investigate the colony on LV-426. The story was written by Battlestar Galactica writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle. Now, there seems to be confusion on when this takes place. I have read it happens either right after Aliens or Alien 3. Among the environments that the player(s) will explore is: the Sulaco, the colony on LV-426, the derelict alien ship that was seen in the first film.  It will have single-player and multiplayer modes.

Looks good, but I got to nitpick. The Sulaco left LV-426 at the end of Aliens. At the beginning of Alien 3 the ship experience a fire and the survivors were placed in an escape pod while still in cryogenic stasis. The pod lands on the prison planet and goes from there. Oh well, it still looks like a lot of fun.

Price Reduction on Wolverine & The X-Men; Blue and Gold Teams Revealed (Sort Of)

Marvel has announced that they are dropping the price of Wolverine & The X-Men from $4.99 to $3.99. I may be mistaken, but I think that was the only ongoing title priced at five dollars. Geez. I'm surprised that it wasn't more than that.

In other X-related news, all of the covers that sort of shows the lineups post-Schism has been released. Here's the Blue team with leaders Sebastian Shaw, Jubilee, Emma Frost, and Nate Grey.

And the Gold (or Yellow) team with leaders Nightcrawler (from AoA universe), Wolverine, Rouge, and Havok.

The new direction starts in late October with Wolverine & The X-Men.

200,000 Copies of Justice League #1 Ordered, 100,000 for Six Other DC Titles

Bleeding Cool is reporting that Justice League #1 pre-orders have hit the 200,000 mark with six other unnamed titles hitting the 100,000 mark. As a comparison, only five books have hit the 100,000 mark from January through July.

Currently, the best selling comic of 2011 is Ultimate Spider-Man #160 which marked the death of Peter Parker. That book sold 159,355 copies. The number #2 best seller is June's Amazing Spider-Man #666 at 135,568 copies. This was the start of the "Spider Infestation" arc, as well as the campaign to have your local comic store on the cover being saved by Spidey. If accurate, this would make Justice League #1 the best seller of 2011.

Now days, it's very rare to have books selling 100,000+ copies - as evidence by only five out of an untold number of books produced this year. So congratulations to DC for a great start. Let's see how those numbers are in say December or January (which would be issues #4 or #5).

Live Action Voltron Movie Update

While ShockYa talked to Joshua Oppenheimer regarding the Conan the Barbarian movie, they asked for an update regarding the live action Voltron movie.

We’re in the process of starting up. Like everything in Hollywood, it’s been sort of a long delay in terms of getting all the rights settled. And we’ve just started the scripting process. We’re really excited, because like “Conan” it’s another property that we knew from when we were kids, Tom and I. And to be able to sort of come back to something from when you were 13 or 14 years old and just imagining it in your brain is the great part of this business: you get to stay a kid forever on some level. We’re working the folks at Relativity, and the folks at Red Atlas that we did “Uncharted” with, and we hope to have that knocked into shape over the course of the next few months.

The "Tom" is  fellow Conan co-writer Thomas Dean Donelly. Relativity Media acquired the rights to distribute  which apparently included doing new animated material as well as a film.  Voltron is a anime series about a team of young pilots who defended the galaxy. Their individual vehicles joined together to form a super robot.

Scarlet Spider Returning?

Marvel released a teaser for the Spider-Island event that has just started. It is the same image that they teased back at San Diego a few weeks back. The image is the sweat top that was worn by the Scarlet Spider.

For those who don't know (you may be fortunate) Peter had a clone made of him during a story arc back in the 1970s. It was believed to be destroyed because we saw Spider-Man get rid of it. Well, the clone survived and decided to leave New York and journey around aimlessly. He returned back in the 1990s when it seemed like Aunt May was dying (for the thousandth time). Seeing that someone needed help, he quickly fashioned a costume and called himself the Scarlet Spider.  Pete and the clone met and at this point the clone created a new name for himself, Ben Reilly. To make a long story short, Ben became Spider-Man when Peter and Mary Jane (back when they WERE married) left to have a normal life. Well, the story arc ended with Pete being Spidey again and Ben dying.

So, is Ben returning? Not likely. This story arc/event Spider-Island is dealing with the people of New York having the powers of Spider-Man. My theory is we'll have a new Scarlet Spider, but it won't be a Pete clone. Now, will he/she keep on going after the event is an entirely different question.

IDW to do New Star Trek Series Based off 2009 Movie; New and Old Stories Involved

Beginning in September, IDW Publishing will chronicle the voyages of the Starship Enterprise based off the successful 2009 film reboot. It will be written by Mike Johnson (who wrote the adaptation of the film and the tie-ins), with art by Stephen Molnar (Star Trek: Mission's End, Michael Chiklis' Pantheon). What I find interesting is not only will it be new stories, but they will re-imagine stories from the original series. The creative team is receiving collaboration from Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci.

I have been wondering when they would do a series using the likenesses of the new crew. Quite honestly, there is enough room for both casts. The new series can be called Star Trek, the original cast can be in a book called Star Trek Classic. There, potential problem solved and everybody is happy. Glad to have been some help. Call on me anytime.

Catch Cap and THOR Battling.....?

Got this video from Comic Book Movie's website. Up till now, we have only seen Captain America in the images and videos of this battle sequence. Today, we see that the God of Thunder has joined the fray. We still don't know who they are battling, but ...we do know, don't we. :)

I'm ready to see more of the others in this fight. Heck, I'm ready to see this film! I still can't believe this is really gonna happen! An Avengers movie - live action no less! The Avengers is scheduled for a May 4, 2012 release.

Falcon, Sharon Carter to be in Captain America Sequel?

If Chris Markus and Steven McFeely have their way, the co-writers of Captain America: The First Avenger would have Sharon Carter and Cap's modern-day crime-fighting partner The Falcon in the next film.

“I want both of them!” says Markus. “Sharon is meaty, almost to a point where you get a little uncomfortable because her relation to Peggy has shifted over the years, as time has passed. She's the sister, she's the cousin, she's the niece. You have to walk a fine line there because it does seem like you're dating your girlfriend's daughter. Falcon is awesome. We can't play with time so much to have Cap go back to Harlem in the '70's and clean up the streets, but it would be awesome to go straight up, like, 'Shaft' with Cap and the Falcon.”

The duo tell PopcornBiz that they would also like to spend more time back in the 1940s. The storyline from the first film took place over a course of two or three years.

I can't see all of that happening in one film, but would l would like to see it. There is also the possibility of

I've also threw out the Invaders option recently as a film on it's own, but could be in a future Cap movie. The future is bright for the movie version of Cap.

Ridley Scott Returns to Blade Runner

Deadline is reporting that Ridley Scott has signed on to direct and produce another installment of Blade Runner. It was unclear which direction the next movie will go, so let's speculate....

A sequel involving Deckard and Rachel? Possible, but I don't think so. If it is a continuation of their story, do they go after Harrison Ford and Sean Young? No, I don't think so. I don't think Ford would be interested. Honestly, is their anything left to their story? I mean - a two hour movie of them being chased by other Blade Runners? Not interested.

A sequel in name only involving new characters? More than likely. A new generation of Blade Runners chasing down a new and improved version of replicants? Maybe bring back Edward James Olmos as Gaff - now heading the department.

A prequel dealing with the introduction of the Blade Runners and why they were needed in the first place? I think this will appeal more to Scott the most. Yes, he is currently doing Prometheus, which is still being debated by people on whether or not it is a prequel to Alien, but that shouldn't be a problem.

All in all, I like the idea. Enjoyed the movie and wish there had been more. Now there will be.

Warner Brothers Release Official Synopsis to Man of Steel

An open casting call in Vancouver Island for the upcoming Superman reboot: The Man of Steel. In the release, the synopsis for the film was included. This is what it said...

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.”

They are currently filming in Illinois and will move to Vancouver in October. The film is scheduled for a June 14, 2013 release. This is a great cast, equal to the original film (if not a little better). What are your thoughts on what you have seen or heard so far?

Pics of Avengers Filming May Reveal Villain(s)? (Spoiler)

The fans have been trying to figure out who the Avengers will be assembling against for awhile. The trailer at the end of Captain America shows that Loki will be involved somehow. There have also been rumblings about the Skrulls - an alien race that first appeared in Fantastic Four comics. There has also been conjecture that a Loki controlled Hulk may be a villain, a reference to the Avengers' story in issue #1.

Recent photos may give a hint to the answer to the question. Currently, they are filming in Cleveland (posing as New York) although we've only seen pictures of Chris Evans as Captain America. Check these out....

This is obviously Evans' stunt double battling what looks like two guys in motion capture suits for CGI work.

A better look at the motion capture suit and what I assume is a prop guy holding what appears to be a big laser gun/rifle. Is it the Skrulls after all? It might be. If so, would that mean that the Kree are not far behind? I hope so. Especially an appearance by a Captain Mar-vell. That would be great. Then spin him off on his own movie.

DC Unveils Commercials for The New 52

As part of their campaign to draw more attention and interests into the relaunch that starts to weeks from today, DC unveiled two commercials for the new universe. The first lasts about 30 seconds and covers basically the Justice League.

The second is about two minutes long and covers the same material with images from some of the other books. This commercial debuted over on ht LA Times website.

My thoughts - it looks cool, but I don't know if it will do the job. Will it get people who are sitting in the theater to go "Wow, I need to find a comic store and pick those up!" I mean, they want you to go to their website, but how about the local comic shops? It would probably be nice to give a little shout out to them. Just put up a blank graphic with the DC logo on it and let a few stores be able to put their logo on their as well to get attention.

If Logan's Run is Successful, Nicolas Winding Refn Gets Wonder Woman

The Playlist is reporting that Nicholas Winding Refn may get his wish to do a Wonder Woman movie...

I think someone said to me in a meeting that if I get ‘Logan’s Run’ right, then I’ll get Wonder Woman.

I guess "getting Logan's run right means makes a ton of money. His most recent movie is Drive starring Ryan Gosling. The two will team up for the Sci-Fi remake. And to his choice to portray the Amazon Princess?

...I also think that Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) would be the perfect Wonder Woman...

It looks like Logan's Run is set for a 2014 release, which means Wonder Woman wouldn't be out until 2016 at the earliest. With Man of Steel being pushed back until 2013, who knows about Warner Brothers plans for movie adaptions of JLA, Flash, WW, the possible Green Lantern sequel and the Batman reboot that has already been announced.

So, what are your thoughts?  I believe it's too early to talk about a WW film after the nightmare of the TV pilot.
